| Born and brought up in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, John Hastings went on to pursue a career in town planning in the UK and Hong Kong. After a 26 year stint in Hong Kong he returned to UK in 2004 to Lincolnshire but he still maintains close links with his native Kirkcudbright. He is a relative newcomer to painting " I enjoyed art at school and in my town planning work I kept involved with the graphic aspects of planning projects."
He dabbled in sculpture attending an evening course at Bath College of Art in the 70s but other than that has no formal training
He follows in the footsteps of his late father Jack Hastings a well known Kirkcudbright artist who exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy. John's art depicts the landscape and townscapes of the town in Scotland where he was brought up and in Lincolnshire where he now lives. He has also travelled extensively and is currently engaged in painting images from his travels. His inspiration arises from attempting to depict on canvas the many facets of light in the landscape, the sky and the built environment. He works in acrylic and enjoys the vibrancy of colour which this medium supplies. |
