The central panel of  'The Remains' is based loosely on an exterior detail from the Pallazzo Ducale in San Marco, Venezia (St. Mark's Square, Venice). The circular pattern was initially created in textured sand and was later chipped into and scraped away to create a flatter, slight relief effect. At the time of producing this painting, I was struck by the similarity between my choices of natural and man-made subject matter. The intention was to create a surface reflective of a flattened fossilised ammonite.
